Why small business is its own list

A 6-person roofing company
is not a Fortune 500 lead.

Selling to small business means reaching the person who owns the problem and signs the check — usually the same person. These are the filters that actually separate a small business list from a generic business file.

Employee count

Narrow to 1–4, 5–9, 10–19, or 20–49 employees. The single most reliable way to skip enterprise and reach owner-operators.

The core filter

Annual revenue

Screen by revenue band so you're calling businesses that can actually afford what you sell, before you spend a minute dialing.

Qualifies the spend

Industry & SIC code

Target the trades and professions you serve. Every business carries a SIC code, so you can pull just plumbers, just clinics, just firms.

Targets the fit

Local geography

Down to city, county, or ZIP. Essential when your service area is a 30-mile radius rather than a national footprint.

What a record looks like

Enough to make the call.

Every record carries the business, the contact, and the qualifiers — so your rep knows who they're calling and why before the phone rings.

Does the Do Not Call list apply to business calls?

Generally, no — the National Do Not Call Registry covers personal residential and mobile numbers, not business-to-business calls. That's a meaningful practical difference when your prospects are companies rather than households, and it's one reason B2B calling campaigns look different from consumer ones.

The exemption is not unlimited. Certain B2B calls are still covered by the Telemarketing Sales Rule, and calls that reach a business owner's personal cell can raise separate questions. Autodialers and prerecorded messages carry their own TCPA obligations regardless of who you're calling. Some states add rules on top of the federal ones.

Every record we sell carries a DNC status flag so you can filter however your compliance policy requires. Call us and we'll walk through how buyers in your category typically handle it — though this isn't legal advice, and you should confirm your specific campaign with your attorney.

Questions

Before you buy.

How do you define a small business?
You define it. Filter by employee count and revenue band to draw the line wherever it makes sense for what you sell — a 3-person shop and a 45-person firm are both small businesses, but they rarely buy the same thing.
Do I get the owner's name, or just the company?
Records include a contact name and title where available, which for small businesses is typically the owner, president, or principal. Availability varies by industry and company size — smaller operations are more likely to list the owner directly.
Are the phone numbers direct lines or switchboards?
For most small businesses there's no switchboard to get past — the listed number reaches the office, and often the owner. That's the practical advantage of selling into this segment.
How current is the data?
US business data is updated quarterly and Canadian data annually. Small businesses open, close, and move more often than large ones, so ask us for the current accuracy figure for your industry before you commit to a large order.
Can I get email addresses too?
Yes, though email lists are priced above phone lists — verification costs more. See email lists for details, or ask us about pairing both for the same filtered set.
What if the numbers are wrong?
Tell us and we'll replace them or refund you. Business data goes stale faster than consumer data, and any vendor claiming a perfect file is overselling.
